Time to dream

I want to get personal for a moment.  After all, the purpose of this blog is to help you think about how you can build the personal and professional life you have always wanted.

I want you to dream for a moment.  Go to that place in your mind that you likely seldom allow yourself the freedom to experience.  Think back to all of the things you used to dream about doing or being when you “grew up.”  Now, let me ask you a question..have you done them all?  If not, why not?  Is it because you are “grown up” and you think you have too many other things that take priority?  As we move through our lives it is very easy for us to get caught up in our daily tasks and responsibilities and forget about those things that we wanted to do.

When we sacrifice our dreams and settle for less than our ideal lives, less than our ideal selves, we are not only shortchanging ourselves, but also all of those around us who care for us and look up to us.  One of the most important lessons I believe we can teach our children is that it is vital that they create as many options for themselves as they possibly can.  Explore, sample, try!  These are the ways we find what we truly love, where our passion lies.  When we close doors we limit the opportunities for a joyful and fulfilled life.

I ran into some friends last night at the grocery store.  During our conversation we began to talk about this concept of finding your passion.  The husband was very open in his reply that he has been fortunate enough to be living his passion at work.  I have had the good fortune to work with this individual for some time now and I must say that even from a distance, a stranger would know that he is telling the truth. He exudes a positive energy that is contagious to those around him. Even on what others might consider a challenging or stressful day, his attitude is one of the most upbeat and clearly satisfied I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.  His work clearly fulfills him.

This is the kind of life I hope we all can find.  Consider the options, remember your dreams.  And when you think that you are too grown up or too stuck to change course and go after what you really want, think again.  How much better would you feel, and how much better would your life be if you were living your passion right now?
